USS Fox (CG-33)

USS Fox (CG-33) was a Belknap-class guided missile cruiser in the United States Navy. Named for Gustavus Vasa Fox, Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War, Fox was laid down on January 15, 1965, by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine; launched on October 23, 1965; and commissioned on May 17, 1967.

Fox served extensively during the Cold War, primarily operating in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. She participated in numerous fleet exercises and deployments, contributing to the Navy's presence and power projection capabilities. As a guided missile cruiser, her primary armament included surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) to provide air defense for carrier battle groups and other naval task forces. She also carried anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities and guns for surface combat.

Throughout her career, Fox underwent several modernizations and overhauls to maintain her operational effectiveness. These upgrades included improvements to her missile systems, radar, and sonar.

USS Fox was decommissioned on April 15, 1994, and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on the same day. She was subsequently scrapped. While she is no longer in service, her name and service record remain a part of naval history.
