David Mitchell (New Zealand poet)
David Mitchell is a New Zealand poet, short story writer, and essayist. Born in Taranaki, New Zealand in 1963, he is known for his accessible yet complex poetry that often explores themes of landscape, memory, family, and the human condition. His work frequently incorporates elements of New Zealand history and culture.
Mitchell studied at Victoria University of Wellington, where he was associated with the influential creative writing program. He has published several collections of poetry, including Pipe Dreams in Ponsonby (1991), Be Your Own Man (1993), Someone Else's Country (1996), Say Something Back (2004), The Rule of thirds (2013), and Give Us This Day (2023). His poetry has also appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies.
In addition to his poetry, Mitchell has published short stories and essays. He has also worked as a teacher and editor. He received the Robert Burns Fellowship at Otago University in 2008. Mitchell's work is characterized by its clarity, emotional resonance, and keen observation of the world around him. He is considered a significant voice in contemporary New Zealand literature.
