USS Emerald (PYc-1)

The USS Emerald (PYc-1) was a United States Navy coastal patrol yacht in commission from 1940 to 1946. Originally built as the civilian yacht Aras, she was acquired by the Navy in November 1940 and converted for naval service. Assigned to the 6th Naval District, she primarily conducted patrol and escort duties along the southeastern coast of the United States during World War II. Specifically, she patrolled the waters off Charleston, South Carolina, and its approaches, contributing to anti-submarine efforts and coastal defense. Following the end of the war, the Emerald was decommissioned in January 1946 and sold back into private ownership later that year. Her naval service highlights the role of requisitioned civilian vessels in augmenting the U.S. Navy's capabilities during wartime.
