Ixworth

Ixworth is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk, England. Located about six miles (10 km) northeast of Bury St Edmunds, its history dates back to Roman times, evidenced by the presence of Roman settlements and finds in the area.

The name "Ixworth" is believed to derive from the Old English Icse Worp, meaning "Icsa's enclosure" or "Icsa's farmstead". The village is situated on the River Black Bourn.

Historically, Ixworth was a market town, granted a market charter in 1199. While the market is no longer held, the village retains a range of local amenities including shops, pubs, and a primary school.

A significant landmark in Ixworth is the remains of Ixworth Priory, a former Augustinian priory founded in the 12th century. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the priory buildings were largely demolished, but some ruins and earthworks remain.

Ixworth is connected to other settlements via road networks and is part of the Blackbourn electoral division of Suffolk County Council. The population of Ixworth, as measured in the 2011 census, was approximately 2,264.
