Shadow Warrior (2013 video game)

Shadow Warrior (2013) is a first-person shooter video game developed by Flying Wild Hog and published by Devolver Digital. It is a reimagining of the 1997 game of the same name. The game follows Lo Wang, a modern ninja warrior employed by the powerful Zilla Enterprise.

The story begins with Wang being sent to retrieve the legendary Nobitsura Kage sword for his employer, Master Zilla. However, the acquisition goes awry when Wang encounters Yakuza forces and learns the sword is connected to the Shadow Realm. He is subsequently betrayed and left for dead.

As Wang fights for survival, he is bound to a banished demon, Hoji. Together, they must navigate a world overrun by demonic forces unleashed from the Shadow Realm and uncover the truth behind the Nobitsura Kage. The gameplay emphasizes fast-paced combat featuring a combination of melee weapons (primarily the katana), firearms, and magical abilities.

The game features a linear campaign with levels set in a stylized, modern Japanese setting. Combat encounters often involve waves of enemies requiring the player to utilize different weapons and abilities strategically. The katana is a core element of the combat system, allowing for precise strikes and special moves. Upgrade systems for weapons and Wang's abilities are present, offering customization and progression.

Shadow Warrior (2013) received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its fast-paced action, over-the-top humor, and the satisfying feel of the katana-based combat. Criticisms were occasionally leveled at the story's pacing and some aspects of the level design. The game spawned sequels, Shadow Warrior 2 and Shadow Warrior 3, continuing the adventures of Lo Wang.
