USS Anchorage (LSD-36)
The USS Anchorage (LSD-36) was an Anchorage-class dock landing ship of the United States Navy. Named for the city of Anchorage, Alaska, she was the first ship to bear that name.
The USS Anchorage (LSD-36) was designed to transport and launch amphibious vehicles and equipment in support of amphibious assault operations. Her well deck could accommodate Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) vehicles, Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vehicles, and other amphibious assault craft. The ship also had a flight deck capable of supporting helicopter operations.
The USS Anchorage (LSD-36) was commissioned on March 15, 1969, and served in the U.S. Navy for over 34 years. During her service, she participated in numerous operations and exercises around the world, including deployments to the Mediterranean Sea, the Western Pacific, and the Persian Gulf. She also provided support for humanitarian relief efforts.
Decommissioned on October 3, 2003, the USS Anchorage (LSD-36) was eventually sunk as a target during a training exercise in 2011. Her service contributed significantly to U.S. naval power projection and amphibious warfare capabilities.
