The MAI's responsibilities encompass a wide range of areas crucial to maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, and managing Portugal's borders. This includes combating crime, managing traffic safety, preventing and responding to natural disasters and other emergencies, overseeing elections, and ensuring the security of state assets.

The Minister of Internal Administration is the head of the ministry and a member of the Portuguese government. They are responsible for setting the overall policy direction and overseeing the implementation of the ministry's programs. The MAI works in close collaboration with other government ministries and agencies, as well as international organizations, to achieve its objectives. The headquarters of the Ministry is located in Lisbon.
