Arch of Trajan (Ancona)

The Arch of Trajan in Ancona is a Roman triumphal arch erected in 115 AD in honour of Emperor Trajan. It stands in the harbour of Ancona, Italy, marking Trajan's improvements to the port, which he financed. These improvements were crucial for facilitating trade with the East.

The arch is constructed of white marble from the quarries of Marmara Island in the Sea of Marmara. It is a single-arched structure, approximately 18.5 meters high. The architect was likely Apollodorus of Damascus, who also designed Trajan's Forum and other grand structures in Rome.

The facades of the arch are adorned with bronze statues of Trajan and his wife Plotina, as well as his sister Marciana. These statues are now lost. The attic originally bore bronze inscriptions detailing Trajan's achievements in Ancona. These inscriptions are also no longer extant but are known through historical accounts.

The arch is considered one of the best-preserved Roman triumphal arches, serving as a significant example of Roman imperial art and architecture. It has undergone several restorations over the centuries, but its original form remains largely intact. The Arch of Trajan continues to be a prominent landmark in Ancona and a testament to the city's Roman past.
