Tumbling (sport)

Tumbling is an individual acrobatic gymnastics discipline involving a continuous series of acrobatic skills performed on a 25-meter sprung track. The primary objective is to execute a sequence of powerful, controlled skills, demonstrating both difficulty and impeccable form. The gymnast aims to maximize the height and distance of each skill while maintaining balance and precision throughout the entire routine.

The routine typically consists of eight connected skills, although this can vary depending on the level of competition. These skills often include variations of handsprings, tucks, pikes, layouts, and twisting elements. The degree of difficulty of these elements contributes significantly to the overall score.

Judging in tumbling considers several factors, including the difficulty of the skills performed, the execution of those skills (form, height, distance, control), and the overall composition of the routine. Deductions are given for flaws such as landing errors, steps out of bounds, and insufficient amplitude.

Tumbling is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG). It is a part of acrobatic gymnastics competitions and features events at the World Championships and World Games. While not currently an Olympic sport, tumbling has a dedicated following and continues to grow in popularity worldwide. The sport requires exceptional strength, power, flexibility, coordination, and spatial awareness.
