Tropical Storm Sinlaku (2014)
Tropical Storm Sinlaku was a relatively weak tropical cyclone that impacted Southeast Asia in November 2014. It formed as a tropical depression east of the Philippines on November 25th and quickly intensified into a tropical storm, receiving the name Sinlaku. The name "Sinlaku" was contributed by Micronesia and means "sleeping lady" in the Kosraean language.
Sinlaku moved generally westward, crossing the southern Philippines and emerging into the South China Sea. The storm struggled to maintain significant intensity due to unfavorable conditions, including moderate wind shear. It briefly reached its peak intensity with maximum sustained winds estimated at 65 km/h (40 mph) and a minimum central pressure of 998 hPa.
After entering the South China Sea, Sinlaku continued to track westward, gradually weakening. It made landfall over southern Vietnam on November 29th as a tropical depression. Inland, it rapidly dissipated.
While Sinlaku was a weak storm overall, it brought heavy rainfall to portions of the Philippines and Vietnam. This rainfall led to flooding in some areas, disrupting transportation and causing damage to crops. Although the storm did cause some damage, the overall impact was relatively minor due to its low intensity. No deaths were directly attributed to Tropical Storm Sinlaku. Meteorological agencies closely monitored its development and track, issuing warnings to allow for preparedness efforts in vulnerable areas.
