Tromley

A Tromley is a device, historically used in metallurgy, specifically in ore processing. Its primary function was to separate materials based on size. It typically consisted of a rotating cylindrical sieve or screen. As the cylinder rotated, material fed into it would be sorted, with smaller particles passing through the screen openings and larger particles remaining inside, to be discharged at the end of the cylinder. Tromleys were commonly employed in the mining industry to classify crushed ore before further processing, such as concentration or smelting. The size of the screen openings could be adjusted to control the particle size fractions obtained. While less common in modern industrial operations due to the development of more sophisticated screening technologies, Tromleys remain useful in smaller-scale operations or for specific applications where their simple design and robust construction are advantageous.
