Pierre Durand (equestrian, born 1955)

Pierre Durand (born February 16, 1955, in Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle, Gironde) is a French equestrian show jumping rider. He achieved international acclaim for his partnership with the Selle Français gelding Jappeloup.

Durand and Jappeloup famously won the individual gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. They also secured a team bronze medal at the same games. In addition to Olympic success, Durand and Jappeloup were crowned European Champions in 1987 and won the World Cup Final in 1990. Their partnership represented a significant achievement for French equestrian sport and is often celebrated for overcoming initial skepticism due to Jappeloup's relatively small stature for a show jumping horse.

Durand retired from competition after Jappeloup's death in 1991. Since his retirement, he has remained involved in equestrian sports and has also pursued a career in law and business. He has been a commentator for equestrian events and has contributed to the promotion of show jumping in France. His story, and that of Jappeloup, has been the subject of books and a biographical film.
