Trivulzio

The Trivulzio family was an aristocratic family of Milanese origin, prominent in Lombardy and throughout Italy from the 12th century until its extinction in the 18th century. They played significant roles in the political, military, and religious history of the region.

Notable members include:

  • Gian Giacomo Trivulzio (c. 1440-1518): A condottiero (military leader) who served various Italian powers, including the Sforza of Milan and later the Kingdom of France. He was a key figure in the Italian Wars and known for his strategic acumen. His switching of allegiances was a notable aspect of his career. He is sometimes referred to as Giangiacomo or Gian Giacomo.

  • Agostino Trivulzio (c. 1485-1548): A Cardinal of the Catholic Church, appointed by Pope Leo X. He held various important positions within the church hierarchy.

  • Scaramuccia Trivulzio (1465-1527): Another condottiero, brother of Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, who also served in the Italian Wars.

  • The Trivulzio Library (Biblioteca Trivulziana): A historical library in Milan, initially assembled by members of the Trivulzio family, containing a significant collection of manuscripts, incunabula (books printed before 1501), and printed books. It is now housed in the Sforza Castle in Milan.

The family's influence waned in the 18th century, and the line eventually died out. However, their legacy is preserved through their contributions to military history, religious leadership, and, particularly, through the significant cultural heritage of the Trivulzio Library. Their patronage of the arts and sciences also contributed to the Renaissance and post-Renaissance cultural landscape of Lombardy and Italy.
