Keurbos

Keurbos, also sometimes spelled as keurboom, refers to two species of South African trees or shrubs, both members of the legume family (Fabaceae). The most common usage typically refers to:

  • Virgilia oroboides (Keurboom): This is a fast-growing, evergreen tree native to the southern Cape regions of South Africa. It's known for its prolific displays of fragrant, pea-like, pink or mauve flowers, often appearing in spring and attracting bees and other pollinators. It is often cultivated as an ornamental tree due to its attractive appearance and rapid growth. It is relatively short-lived.

  • Virgilia divaricata: Another species of Virgilia, related to Virgilia oroboides. While less common in cultivation, it shares similar characteristics and also bears attractive flowers. It's also native to parts of South Africa. The characteristics differentiating it from V. oroboides are not always readily apparent to the non-specialist.

The name "Keurboom" is Afrikaans, translating roughly to "choice tree" or "select tree," possibly referring to the tree's beauty or desirable characteristics. These trees play a role in local ecosystems, providing habitat and resources for various animals.
