Trail Creek (Lake Michigan)
Trail Creek is a small river located in northwest Indiana, United States, emptying into Lake Michigan. It is approximately 15 miles (24 km) long and drains a watershed of about 60 square miles (160 km2). The creek flows generally northward through LaPorte County, passing through the city of Michigan City before reaching the lake.
The creek's watershed is largely agricultural, with some urban and industrial development, particularly near Michigan City. Trail Creek is known for its seasonal steelhead trout runs, attracting anglers to the area. These steelhead are typically stocked by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Historically, Trail Creek played a vital role in the development of Michigan City, serving as a transportation route and a source of water power for mills. The creek's mouth also provided a sheltered harbor that facilitated early commercial activity.
Water quality in Trail Creek has been a concern due to agricultural runoff and urban stormwater discharge. Various efforts have been undertaken to improve water quality and habitat, including the implementation of best management practices for agriculture and the restoration of riparian areas.
