Traction (album)
Traction is the eighth studio album by the American progressive rock band Spock's Beard, released in 2003. It marks a significant shift in the band's sound and internal dynamics, being the first album after the departure of founding member and primary songwriter Neal Morse.
The album was written and recorded by the remaining members – Alan Morse, Dave Meros, Ryo Okumoto, and Nick D'Virgilio – who collectively shared songwriting responsibilities. While previous Spock's Beard albums were largely characterized by Morse's distinct compositional style and spiritual themes, Traction presents a darker, more guitar-driven sound, with lyrical themes exploring disillusionment, societal commentary, and personal struggles.
The album received generally positive reviews, with critics acknowledging the band's ability to adapt and maintain their progressive rock identity despite the significant lineup change. Key tracks include "The Light," "Skin," and "June." Traction is considered an important album in Spock's Beard's discography, demonstrating their resilience and creative evolution.
