Gary Wang (American businessman)
Gary Wang is an American businessman and software engineer, best known as the co-founder and former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. He also co-founded Alameda Research, a quantitative trading firm.
Wang played a pivotal role in building FTX's technology infrastructure and overseeing its technical operations. He reportedly wrote the initial code for FTX's platform. Prior to his involvement in cryptocurrency, Wang worked as a software engineer at Google.
Following the collapse of FTX in November 2022, Wang cooperated with authorities investigating the company's activities. He pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges, including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit commodities fraud, and conspiracy to commit securities fraud. He agreed to cooperate with the prosecution of other FTX executives, including Sam Bankman-Fried. His testimony was crucial in the subsequent trial of Bankman-Fried.
Wang's involvement in the FTX fraud included creating a "backdoor" in the FTX code that allowed Alameda Research to withdraw unlimited funds, a key element in the misappropriation of customer funds. He has testified about his knowledge of and participation in these fraudulent activities.
