Tommy Smith (footballer, born 1990)
Tommy Smith (born Thomas Leigh Smith, 31 March 1990) is a New Zealand international footballer who plays as a defender for Milton Keynes Dons.
Career
Smith began his professional career with Ipswich Town, making his debut in 2008. He spent several seasons with Ipswich, becoming a regular in the first team and eventually club captain. He made over 250 appearances for the club.
In January 2018, Smith transferred to Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer (MLS). He played for Colorado Rapids for two seasons.
In July 2019, Smith returned to England, signing for Sunderland. He was later released.
He then joined Colchester United in January 2020, before signing for Swindon Town in August 2020. Following a spell with Macarthur FC in Australia, he returned to England again, joining Ipswich Town for a second spell in January 2023. Following this short spell, Smith signed for Milton Keynes Dons in the summer of 2023.
International Career
Born in England, Smith qualifies to represent New Zealand through his father. He made his debut for the New Zealand national team in 2010 and has represented them at the FIFA World Cup and the OFC Nations Cup. He has earned over 50 caps for New Zealand.
