Ted Russell (Canadian politician)

Ted Russell (1904 – 1977) was a Canadian author, playwright, and politician from Newfoundland and Labrador. He served as a Liberal Member of the House of Assembly (MHA) for Labrador South from 1962 to 1975.

Russell was born in Coley's Point, Newfoundland. Before entering politics, he was a teacher, fisherman, and small businessman. He was well-known for his folksy stories and plays, often focusing on the lives and language of rural Newfoundlanders. His works include the play The Holdin' Ground and several collections of short stories. He also wrote and performed radio plays for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

As a politician, Russell was a strong advocate for the people of Labrador, particularly those in his district. He was known for his colourful personality and his ability to connect with ordinary people. He also served as a cabinet minister in the government of Joey Smallwood, holding portfolios such as Minister of Labrador Affairs and Minister of Community and Social Development. Following his retirement from politics in 1975, he continued to write and promote Newfoundland and Labrador culture. He died in 1977. His contributions to Newfoundland and Labrador literature and politics have been recognized through various awards and posthumous honours.
