Tom Patterson (theatre producer)

Tom Patterson (1920 – February 23, 1989) was a Canadian journalist, businessman, and visionary best known as the founder of the Stratford Festival of Canada.

Patterson, a Stratford, Ontario native, conceived the idea of a theatre festival in his hometown as a way to revitalize the local economy, which was suffering after the decline of the railway industry. His initial proposal, presented in 1951, envisioned a festival dedicated to the works of William Shakespeare.

Undeterred by skepticism and limited resources, Patterson persevered. He successfully recruited renowned British director Tyrone Guthrie, who in turn attracted actor Alec Guinness to star in the inaugural season. The first season, held in 1953 in a temporary tent, was a resounding critical and commercial success.

Patterson served as the Stratford Festival's General Manager from its inception until 1967. His dedication and unwavering belief in the project were instrumental in its establishment and early growth. He played a crucial role in shaping the festival's artistic direction and securing funding.

After leaving the Stratford Festival, Patterson remained involved in the arts. He continued to advocate for Canadian theatre and worked on various cultural initiatives. His legacy as the founder of one of North America's leading classical theatre festivals continues to inspire artists and audiences.

He was named a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1967.
