Themisto (daughter of Inachus)
Themisto was, in Greek mythology, a figure primarily known as the daughter of Inachus, the river-god of Argos. Her identity is somewhat fluid across different accounts and her role within the broader mythological narratives is relatively minor compared to other figures of the Inachid family.
Sources generally agree on her parentage, identifying her as a daughter of Inachus. However, her marital history and offspring are subject to conflicting accounts and are often interwoven with other characters named Themisto.
She is sometimes identified as the wife of Athamas, king of Orchomenus in Boeotia. This association is often complicated by the existence of another, more prominent, Themisto, the daughter of Hyrieus. Accounts vary concerning which Themisto was married to Athamas and the mother of his children. Some versions attribute Athamas' children, Erythrius, Leucon, Schoeneus, and Ptous, to the daughter of Inachus, while others ascribe them to the daughter of Hyrieus. The lineage and attribution of descendants are often inconsistent in different mythological sources.
Due to the limited and often contradictory information surrounding Themisto, the daughter of Inachus, it is challenging to construct a definitive or comprehensive account of her life and significance within Greek mythology. She primarily serves as a footnote in the larger narratives surrounding her father and potential husband, Athamas, rather than a major character in her own right.
