The Tip (album)

The Tip is the debut album by American hip hop group, the Ghetto Boys, released in 1988 on Rap-A-Lot Records. It is notable for being one of the earliest releases on the influential Houston-based label and for showcasing the group's original lineup.

The album featured a raw and uncut sound, reflecting the street life experiences of the group. It included lyrical content considered explicit and controversial for its time, focusing on themes of violence, drug dealing, and poverty. The production was handled primarily by producer and Rap-A-Lot founder, James Prince (J. Prince).

The original lineup of the Ghetto Boys at the time of The Tip's release consisted of Raheem, Sir Rap-A-Lot, and the Slim Jukebox. Notably, it predates the lineup that would bring the group mainstream success, which included Bushwick Bill, Scarface, and Willie D.

The Tip did not achieve significant commercial success upon its initial release. However, it holds historical importance as a foundational work in the development of Southern hip hop and for its role in establishing Rap-A-Lot Records as a prominent force in the genre. It is also recognized for contributing to the gangsta rap subgenre.
