Chaos War
The Chaos War was a major crossover event published by Marvel Comics in 2010-2011, spanning multiple titles. It primarily involved the God of Chaos, Amatsu-Mikaboshi, also known as the Chaos King, and his attempts to erase all of existence and return the universe to the primordial void of chaos from which it originated.
The conflict saw Mikaboshi assembling a vast army of resurrected villains and cosmic entities, overwhelming many of Earth's and the universe's defenders. Key to the resistance were Hercules, who ascended to become a god of gods after the death of Zeus, and his newly formed God Squad, comprised of various heroes and gods from different pantheons.
The storyline explored themes of order versus chaos, the nature of divinity, and the importance of hope in the face of annihilation. Major plot points included the resurrection of many deceased heroes and villains, the fall of several pantheons of gods, and the ultimate sacrifice of Hercules to contain and eventually defeat the Chaos King, though at great personal cost. The consequences of the Chaos War had lasting effects on the Marvel Universe, particularly affecting the status quo of Hercules and the divine realms.
The event was written primarily by Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente and involved numerous tie-in issues across various Marvel titles, showcasing the widespread impact of Mikaboshi's assault. The main series, Chaos War, was supplemented by tie-in mini-series and one-shots that focused on different characters and corners of the Marvel Universe affected by the conflict.
