Kaliro
Kaliro is a district in the Eastern Region of Uganda. Its chief town, also named Kaliro, is the location of the district headquarters.
Location:
Kaliro District is bordered by Namutumba District to the north, Buyende District to the northwest, Luuka District to the west, Mayuge District to the south, and Iganga District to the east. Kaliro, the district headquarters, is approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) northwest of Iganga, the nearest large town. This location is roughly 160 kilometers (99 miles) east of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.
Overview:
Kaliro District was created in 2006, carved out of Kamuli District. The district is primarily rural, with agriculture being the dominant economic activity.
Population:
The population of Kaliro District has been growing. The national census of 2014 enumerated the population at 236,199.
Economy:
Agriculture is the mainstay of the Kaliro District economy. Common crops grown include maize, beans, cassava, sweet potatoes, and coffee. Livestock farming is also practiced.
Administration:
The district is administered by a District Local Government, headed by an elected District Chairperson. The district is further divided into sub-counties, parishes, and villages for administrative purposes.
