Tera 100

Tera 100 was a French supercomputer built by Bull SA (now Atos) and deployed at the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA), a French public research organization, in 2010. It was the first supercomputer in Europe to exceed a sustained performance of one petaflop (one quadrillion floating point operations per second).

The system was based on a Bull Novascale architecture, utilizing Intel Xeon 7500 series processors (Nehalem-EX). It comprised over 140,000 processor cores interconnected via a high-speed interconnect called Bull eXtreme Link Interconnect (exeli).

Tera 100 was primarily used for simulating nuclear weapons as part of the French nuclear deterrent program. Its capabilities also allowed for research in other computationally intensive fields, such as climate modeling, materials science, and astrophysics.

Upon its launch, Tera 100 was ranked among the top supercomputers globally. However, advancements in supercomputing technology have since surpassed its performance. The supercomputer was eventually decommissioned. Its successor, the Tera 1000, continues the work of advanced simulation and scientific discovery.
