Talikoti

Talikoti refers to a significant historical battle fought in 1565 between the Vijayanagara Empire and the Deccan Sultanates. This battle marked a turning point in South Indian history, leading to the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of the largest and most powerful empires in Indian history. The Deccan Sultanates, a coalition of five independent kingdoms - Bijapur, Ahmednagar, Golconda, Bidar, and Berar - united against the Vijayanagara ruler, Aliya Rama Raya. The battle took place near the present-day town of Talikoti in Karnataka, India. The Vijayanagara army, despite its initial strength and advantages, ultimately suffered a decisive defeat due in part to internal divisions and strategic errors. The victory of the Deccan Sultanates resulted in the plunder and destruction of the Vijayanagara capital, Hampi, and significantly weakened the empire, although it continued to exist in a diminished capacity for some time after the battle. The Battle of Talikoti is also sometimes referred to as the Battle of Rakshasi-Tangadi.
