TSS Duke of York (1935)

The TSS Duke of York was a British twin-screw steamship (TSS) built in 1935 by John Brown & Company at Clydebank, Scotland, for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). She was primarily employed on the Heysham–Belfast route, providing passenger and cargo services across the Irish Sea.

The Duke of York was one of three sister ships, the others being TSS Duke of Argyll and TSS Duke of Lancaster, all designed for the same route and service. These vessels were known for their speed, comfort, and reliability.

During World War II, the Duke of York was requisitioned by the Admiralty and served as a troop transport and hospital ship. She participated in various operations, including the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940.

After the war, she was refitted and returned to her original role on the Heysham–Belfast route. She continued in service until 1964 when she was withdrawn and subsequently scrapped. The Duke of York played a significant role in connecting Britain and Ireland for several decades, both in peacetime and during wartime.
