SS Shieldhall

The SS Shieldhall is a preserved steamship of the Clyde "Clyde puffer" type, now based in Southampton, England. She is a member of the National Historic Fleet. Built in 1955 by Lobnitz & Co. of Renfrew, Scotland, Shieldhall served as a Glasgow Corporation sludge disposal vessel, carrying treated sewage sludge down the River Clyde to the Firth of Clyde for disposal at sea.

Primarily designed for this utilitarian purpose, Shieldhall was also built with passenger accommodation, offering day trips for Glaswegians to enjoy the scenery of the Clyde. This dual purpose was crucial to her survival, as dedicated sludge vessels were later replaced by pipeline systems.

Decommissioned by Glasgow Corporation in 1976, Shieldhall was acquired by the Solent Steam Packet Limited, a preservation society dedicated to restoring and operating her as a working museum. Volunteers have painstakingly maintained and restored the vessel, enabling her to continue sailing.

Today, SS Shieldhall operates regular passenger excursions from Southampton, offering a glimpse into the age of steam navigation. Passengers can observe the engine room in operation, view the bridge, and explore various parts of the ship. She also participates in maritime festivals and events around the UK. The ship’s preservation is funded by passenger fares, donations, and grants. The SS Shieldhall is a significant example of maritime heritage, demonstrating the engineering and social history of the mid-20th century.
