Syndicate (1993 video game)

Syndicate is a cyberpunk-themed real-time tactics video game released in 1993, developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts. The game is set in a dystopian future where powerful corporations, known as Syndicates, vie for global dominance. Players control a team of four cybernetically augmented agents, carrying out missions to eliminate rival Syndicate operatives, acquire technology, and expand their Syndicate's influence.

Gameplay revolves around issuing orders to the agents in real-time, utilizing a range of weapons and cybernetic enhancements. Agents can be equipped with different weapons, such as Uzis, shotguns, and miniguns, and their performance can be improved through augmentations like enhanced perception, strength, and speed. A key gameplay mechanic is the Persuadatron, a device that allows players to brainwash civilians and enemy agents, turning them into obedient followers. These "persuaded" individuals can be used as bodyguards, cannon fodder, or even to operate vehicles.

The game features a strategic global map where players manage their Syndicate's resources, research new technologies, and select missions. Successful completion of missions increases the Syndicate's control over territories, while failure can lead to rival Syndicates gaining ground. The ultimate goal is to achieve complete global domination, eliminating all competing Syndicates and establishing a monopoly.

Syndicate was notable for its mature and violent themes, its atmospheric cyberpunk setting, and its innovative gameplay mechanics. It received critical acclaim upon release and is considered a classic of the real-time tactics genre. A sequel, Syndicate Wars, was released in 1996, and a reboot of the franchise, a first-person shooter titled Syndicate, was released in 2012.
