Swansea East (Senedd constituency)
Swansea East is a constituency of the Senedd, currently represented by Mike Hedges of the Welsh Labour party. It elects one Member of the Senedd (MS) by the first past the post electoral system.
Boundaries:
The constituency covers the eastern part of the City and County of Swansea. It is comprised of the electoral wards of Bonymaen, Cwmbwrla, Landore, Llansamlet, Manselton, and St. Thomas.
History:
Swansea East was created as one of the original 40 constituencies for the first election to the then National Assembly for Wales in 1999. It largely replaced the former parliamentary constituency of Swansea East. The constituency has been held by the Labour Party since its creation.
Voting:
In Senedd elections, each voter has two votes - one for a constituency MS and one for a regional MS. The regional vote is used to elect additional members from a party list, so as to produce a degree of proportional representation for the overall Senedd membership. Swansea East is part of the South Wales West electoral region.
Members of the Senedd:
- 1999 – 2011: Val Lloyd (Labour)
- 2011 – Present: Mike Hedges (Labour)
