Swan River (northern Minnesota)

The Swan River is a river located in northern Minnesota, in the United States. It is a tributary of the Mississippi River, flowing generally southward. The river is approximately 120 miles (193 km) long.

Its headwaters originate in several small lakes and streams in southwestern Itasca County. It flows through parts of Aitkin and St. Louis counties before entering the Mississippi River near the town of Swan River, Minnesota.

The river's watershed is primarily forested, with some agricultural land use. It is known for its recreational opportunities, including canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Common fish species found in the Swan River include walleye, northern pike, and panfish.

The name "Swan River" is believed to be derived from the presence of swans in the area, although their presence is now less common than in the past.
