Flight Check Squadron (JASDF)

The Flight Check Squadron (飛行点検隊, Hikou-tenken-tai) is a unit within the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) responsible for the calibration and certification of air navigation aids (NAVAIDs) and instrument landing systems (ILS) throughout Japan.

The Squadron’s primary mission is to ensure the accuracy and reliability of these systems, which are critical for safe air operations. This involves performing regular flight inspections of NAVAIDs such as VORs, TACANs, and NDBs, as well as ILS approaches at airports used by the JASDF and civilian aircraft. These inspections include detailed measurements and analyses of signal strength, accuracy, and coverage area.

The Flight Check Squadron utilizes specially equipped aircraft with sophisticated electronic equipment to perform its mission. The data collected during flight inspections is analyzed to identify any discrepancies or malfunctions in the NAVAIDs and ILS systems. The Squadron then reports its findings to the relevant authorities, who are responsible for making necessary repairs or adjustments.

The unit contributes significantly to flight safety by ensuring the availability of accurate and reliable navigation information for all aircraft operating in Japanese airspace. Its activities are conducted in accordance with international standards and regulations for NAVAID calibration and certification.
