Cuninghame

Cuninghame is a historical district and former county located in southwestern Scotland. It formed part of the larger region of Ayrshire. The name "Cuninghame" is believed to derive from the Gaelic Cuningham, potentially meaning "rabbit home" or "king's home."

Historically, Cuninghame was a sheriffdom and later a district of Ayrshire, playing a significant role in the region's agricultural, industrial, and social development. The area is characterised by fertile lands and a coastline along the Firth of Clyde.

The area encompasses a diverse range of towns and villages, including Irvine, Kilwinning, Largs, and Ardrossan. These settlements have historically been involved in industries such as shipbuilding, textiles, and agriculture.

The Lordship of Cuninghame was a significant feudal title, and the region has connections to numerous noble families throughout Scottish history. The modern-day local authority districts encompassing the former Cuninghame area are primarily North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, and part of South Ayrshire. The legacy of Cuninghame is reflected in various place names and historical societies dedicated to preserving the region's heritage.
