Lohheide
Lohheide is a municipality in the district of Celle, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located within the Bergen military training area (Truppenübungsplatz Bergen), and is therefore somewhat unique in its administrative structure and population demographics.
Specifically, Lohheide is situated in the southeastern part of the Lüneburg Heath. Its history is intertwined with the development of the Bergen training area, which was established in 1935. The municipality encompasses several smaller settlements and farmsteads.
The population of Lohheide is largely connected to the military training area, either directly employed by the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) or providing services to the military community. Civilian life in Lohheide is significantly influenced by the presence and operations of the training area.
Historically, the area now comprising Lohheide was sparsely populated before the establishment of the training ground. The creation of the military facility led to a concentration of population and infrastructure in support of the military.
Lohheide operates with a local council and mayor, but its governance is subject to certain regulations due to its location within the military area. The municipality maintains local infrastructure and provides essential services to its residents.
