John Chenoweth (Colorado politician)
John Chenoweth (1897-1986) was a Republican politician from the state of Colorado. He served as a United States Representative for Colorado's 3rd congressional district from 1941 to 1949 and again from 1951 to 1965.
Born in Trinidad, Colorado, Chenoweth attended the University of Denver and later practiced law. He was elected to Congress in 1940, defeating incumbent Democratic Congressman John Martin.
Chenoweth's congressional career spanned several key periods in American history, including World War II and the Cold War. He was known for his conservative views and supported policies focused on agricultural development, water conservation in the West, and a strong national defense. During his time in Congress, he served on the House Agriculture Committee and the House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee. He was a proponent of federal funding for irrigation projects in Colorado and other Western states.
Chenoweth was defeated for re-election in 1948 but successfully regained his seat in 1950. He retired from Congress in 1965. After leaving Congress, Chenoweth remained active in Colorado politics and community affairs. He died in 1986 in Grand Junction, Colorado.
