Velvet Goldmine (song)

"Velvet Goldmine" is a song by the English musician David Bowie, originally recorded in 1971 during the The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars sessions. It was ultimately left off the album, reportedly due to its explicitly suggestive lyrics.

The song is a glam rock number characterized by its fast tempo, driving rhythm, and prominent guitar riffs reminiscent of early rock and roll. Lyrically, "Velvet Goldmine" explores themes of androgyny, bisexuality, and sexual experimentation, consistent with the themes Bowie was exploring during his Ziggy Stardust persona. The title itself evokes imagery of luxury and hidden pleasure, fitting with the song's overall suggestive nature.

"Velvet Goldmine" was not officially released until 1975, appearing as the B-side to the reissue of "Space Oddity." It has since been included on various Bowie compilation albums, including Rarestonebowie (1995) and Re:Call 1 (2015), part of the Five Years (1969–1973) box set. The song has become a favorite among Bowie fans for its energy, provocative lyrics, and status as a "lost" classic from his Ziggy Stardust era. The film Velvet Goldmine (1998), directed by Todd Haynes, takes its name from the song, though the film's soundtrack features a cover version by Placebo rather than Bowie's original recording.
