Black Lake (Montenegro)

Black Lake (Montenegrin: Crno jezero) is a glacial lake located on Mount Durmitor, in the Municipality of Žabljak, northern Montenegro. It is one of the best-known and most visited attractions within Durmitor National Park.

Geography

The Black Lake actually consists of two lakes, Veliko jezero (Big Lake) and Malo jezero (Little Lake). The two lakes are connected by a narrow isthmus that dries up during the summer, effectively creating two separate bodies of water. Veliko jezero has an area of 0.338 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 24.5 meters. Malo jezero has an area of 0.109 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 49.1 meters.

The lake is fed by several mountain streams, the most prominent of which is Mlinsji Potok. Its outflow is the Otoka stream, which soon disappears underground and flows into the Tara River in the canyon of the Bistrica.

The lake is surrounded by dense coniferous forest, reflecting darkly in its waters, which likely contributes to its name. The prominent peak of Međed (Bear) looms over the lake, creating a dramatic backdrop.

Tourism and Recreation

Black Lake is a popular destination for hiking, swimming (though the water is cold), and picnicking. A 3.5-kilometer walking path circles the lake, providing easy access to its shores and surrounding forests. There are several restaurants and cafes in the vicinity, particularly near the main entrance to the lake. It serves as a starting point for numerous hiking trails leading deeper into Durmitor National Park, including routes to the peaks of Međed, Savin Kuk, and others.

Protection

As part of Durmitor National Park, Black Lake is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Measures are in place to preserve the lake's natural beauty and prevent pollution.
