Door Jams
Door jams, more accurately termed "door jambs," are the vertical, wooden or metal framing members that form the sides of a doorway. They are essential structural components of a door frame. The door jambs provide the surface to which the door is hinged or latched, and they work in conjunction with the head jamb (the horizontal top piece) and the sill (the bottom piece, if present) to create the complete door frame.
The primary function of the door jamb is to provide a secure and stable surface for the door to close against. They are often mortised or otherwise prepared to receive the strike plate for the door's latch or deadbolt, ensuring the door can be securely locked. Door jambs also contribute to the overall structural integrity of the wall and the doorway, helping to distribute weight and resist forces.
Door jambs are typically made of wood, metal (such as steel or aluminum), or composite materials. The material choice depends on the application, aesthetic preferences, and budget. Wood jambs are common in residential construction due to their ease of working with and ability to be painted or stained. The dimensions of door jambs vary depending on the thickness of the wall they are installed in and the size of the door opening. The jamb must be thick enough to accommodate the wall's depth, including any drywall or other wall coverings. The width of the jamb provides the necessary surface area for attaching hinges and strike plates. A split jamb, also called a telescopic jamb, allows for adjusting the jamb width to fit varying wall thicknesses.
Installation of door jambs requires careful alignment and leveling to ensure the door hangs and operates properly. Improper installation can lead to problems such as doors that bind, don't close properly, or don't latch securely.
