HMS Tarpon (N17)
HMS Tarpon (N17) was a British T-class submarine of the Royal Navy. Built by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Greenock, she was launched on 9 July 1939 and commissioned on 18 December 1939. Tarpon served during World War II, operating primarily in the North Sea and Atlantic.
During her service, Tarpon sank numerous enemy vessels, including German merchant ships, armed trawlers, and U-boats. Her patrols were often conducted in challenging weather conditions and against heavily defended targets.
Tarpon was lost with all hands on board in April 1940, presumed sunk by a German Q-ship, Schiff 16 (alias Schiff 534 or Raider Schleswig), operating in the Skagerrak. All 59 crew members were lost. She is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
