Alghero

Alghero is a city in the province of Sassari, in northwestern Sardinia, Italy. It is also known as Barceloneta, meaning "Little Barcelona" in Catalan, reflecting its historical ties and cultural connections to Catalonia, Spain.

History: Founded in the 12th century by the Genoese Doria family, Alghero was conquered by the Catalan-Aragonese in the 14th century, and the city remained under Catalan rule for almost 400 years. After Catalan rule ended, Alghero passed under the control of the Savoyards and eventually became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

Algherese Catalan, a variant of the Catalan language, is officially recognized and protected in Sardinia. Street signs are often bilingual, and the language is taught in schools.
