Flag of South Africa (1928–1994)

The Flag of South Africa (1928–1994), also known as the Prince's Flag or the Oranje, Blanje, Blou (Orange, White, Blue) flag, was the national flag of South Africa from 1928 to 1994. It was originally introduced as the flag of the Union of South Africa in 1928 and retained its status when South Africa became a republic in 1961. The flag comprised three horizontal bands of equal width colored orange (top), white, and blue (bottom), mirroring the colours of the flag of the Dutch Republic (the "Prinsenvlag").

At the center of the white band were three smaller flags horizontally displayed. These represented the flags of the United Kingdom (Union Jack) towards the hoist, the Orange Free State (midpoint) and the South African Republic (Transvaal) towards the fly. The inclusion of these flags symbolized the unification of the territories that had comprised the Union of South Africa. The flag was controversial, particularly among the Black African population, as it was seen as a symbol of apartheid and white minority rule.

Following the dismantling of apartheid and the first multiracial elections in 1994, the flag was replaced with the current national flag of South Africa, which incorporates six vibrant colors to represent the diversity of the nation and its future. The old flag has become a sensitive topic, with public displays of it often viewed as a symbol of racial division or nostalgia for the apartheid era. Its display is legally restricted in certain contexts to prevent the promotion of hatred or discrimination.
