Arp 147

Arp 147, also known as IC 298, is an interacting galaxy pair located approximately 430 to 440 million light-years away in the constellation Boötes. It is cataloged in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies compiled by Halton Arp in 1966.

The system is the result of a head-on collision between two spiral galaxies. This collision has created a ring-like structure in one of the galaxies. The ring is composed of intense star formation regions, making it appear blue in color. The other galaxy appears as a more yellow, elliptical object and likely passed through the disk of its companion.

The blue ring is expanding outward from the point of impact. Studying Arp 147 provides insights into the dynamics and star formation processes triggered by galaxy collisions. The system's unusual morphology and active star formation make it a valuable target for astronomical observations across various wavelengths. The interaction highlights the dramatic and transformative effects galaxy collisions can have on galactic structure and evolution.
