Poia Rewi
Poia Rewi (born 1960) is a prominent Māori academic and leader in New Zealand. He is recognized for his significant contributions to Māori language revitalisation, Māori performing arts (especially kapa haka), and Māori leadership.
Rewi is a Professor of Māori Studies at the University of Waikato, where he has held various leadership roles, including Dean of Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao (Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies). His academic work focuses on a wide range of topics related to Māori culture, including language, history, and performance.
He is also actively involved in kapa haka at a national level, serving as a judge and advisor for Te Matatini, the national Māori performing arts festival. His expertise in this area is highly sought after.
Poia Rewi’s contributions extend beyond academia. He is a respected kaumātua (elder) and actively participates in community initiatives aimed at strengthening Māori language and culture.
