Stromboli (food)

A stromboli is a type of savory turnover originating in the United States, though inspired by Italian cuisine. It is essentially a rolled pizza, consisting of various Italian cheeses (typically mozzarella), meats (often Italian cold cuts such as salami, capicola, and prosciutto), and vegetables, all rolled up in a type of Italian bread dough or pizza dough.

The dough is then baked until golden brown. Unlike a calzone, which is folded over, a stromboli is rolled into a log shape before baking. After baking, it is typically sliced into portions and served hot. Dipping sauces, such as marinara sauce, are often served alongside.

While the exact origin is debated, the stromboli is believed to have been created in the Philadelphia area in the 1950s. Different variations exist depending on regional preferences and available ingredients. Some may include different types of cheese, vegetables, or meats. The size of the stromboli can also vary, ranging from individual servings to larger loaves intended for sharing.
