Stigma (Star Trek: Enterprise)
"Stigma" is the title of the 20th episode of the second season of the science fiction television series Star Trek: Enterprise.
The episode focuses on Dr. Phlox contracting a rare and fatal condition called Pa'nar Syndrome, a disease that affects the ability of Vulcans to mind meld. He learns that he contracted it from a Vulcan physician, Dr. Tolaris, during a procedure involving Vulcan neural tissue samples. The episode explores the prejudice and discrimination faced by Vulcans with Pa'nar Syndrome, who are ostracized and considered untouchable within Vulcan society.
The Pa'nar Syndrome is established as being spread via the mind-meld process. It is a source of shame and disgrace for those afflicted, effectively rendering them outcasts. Tolaris, despite being a physician, is shunned and forced to live in isolation due to his condition.
The central conflict revolves around the medical ethics of treating a disease that carries such a heavy social stigma and the broader examination of prejudice and intolerance. Phlox and Captain Archer must confront the societal biases surrounding Pa'nar Syndrome and the ethical implications of their actions in treating and potentially curing the condition. The episode highlights the Vulcan High Command's efforts to suppress information about the disease and the negative consequences for those who are infected.
