Stars of Eger (1968 film)
Stars of Eger is a 1968 Hungarian historical drama film directed by Zoltán Várkonyi. It is based on the 1899 novel of the same name (Hungarian: Egri csillagok) by Géza Gárdonyi. The film depicts the Siege of Eger in 1552, a pivotal event in Hungarian history during the Ottoman wars in Europe.
The film follows the story of Gergely Bornemissza, a young soldier, and his childhood friend Éva Cecey, against the backdrop of the advancing Ottoman army. Gergely rises through the ranks to become a lieutenant, demonstrating bravery and ingenuity in defending the strategically important Eger castle. István Dobó, the captain of Eger castle, leads a small, determined garrison against a vastly superior Ottoman force.
The film is noted for its large-scale battle scenes and its patriotic themes. It emphasizes the courage and resilience of the Hungarian defenders against overwhelming odds. It is considered one of the most popular and influential historical films in Hungarian cinema, often shown on national holidays and used in schools to teach Hungarian history and literature. The film's adaptation of the novel includes elements of romance, adventure, and historical accuracy, although, like most adaptations, some liberties were taken.
