Iain Stewart (geologist)

Iain Stewart (born 1964) is a Scottish geologist, academic, and television presenter. He is Professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth, specializing in the communication of geology and earth sciences to the general public.

Stewart is best known for his work on popular science television programs for the BBC, including Journeys from the Centre of the Earth, Earth: The Power of the Planet, How the Earth Made Us, Men of Rock, Rise of the Continents, Planet Oil, How To Grow A Planet, and Volcano Live. His programs often explore the interplay between geological forces and human history and civilization.

Stewart received a BSc in Geography and Geology from Strathclyde University and a PhD from the University of Bristol. His research interests include active tectonics, earthquake geology, and natural hazards. He is a strong advocate for geoheritage and geoparks and has served as a UNESCO ambassador for geoparks. He frequently speaks about the importance of geological understanding in addressing global challenges such as climate change and natural disasters. Stewart has received numerous awards for his work in science communication, including the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize.
