Isinglass (horse)

Isinglass (1890 – 1911) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred by Harry McCalmont, he was one of the great stayers of the late 19th century, known for his remarkable stamina and versatility. He was foaled at Bishop Sutton, Suffolk.

Isinglass, named after a semi-transparent substance used in jelly making, was trained by James Jewitt. He was a chestnut colt by Isonomy out of Dead Lock by Doncaster.

His racing career spanned from 1892 to 1895, during which he achieved legendary status. He was undefeated as a two-year-old in 1892, winning four races including the New Stakes at Ascot and the Middle Park Plate at Newmarket.

In 1893, as a three-year-old, Isinglass achieved the Triple Crown, winning the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, the Derby Stakes, and the St. Leger Stakes. He remained undefeated throughout the year, cementing his reputation as a champion.

Isinglass continued his winning streak in 1894, taking the Princess of Wales's Stakes and the Eclipse Stakes. He showed immense courage and determination in defeating older horses and confirming his dominance in the racing world.

In 1895, his final year of racing, Isinglass won the Ascot Gold Cup, demonstrating his exceptional stamina at a distance of two and a half miles. This victory was particularly significant, proving his ability to perform at the highest level over extended distances.

After his retirement from racing, Isinglass became a successful stallion. He sired several notable racehorses, including Star Shoot, a successful sire in North America.

Isinglass died in 1911 at the age of 21. He is remembered as one of the greatest racehorses in British history, revered for his Triple Crown victory, his undefeated seasons, and his remarkable stamina. His achievements on the track made him a beloved figure in the sport and secured his place in racing folklore.
