St. George's Episcopal Church (Valley Lee, Maryland)
St. George's Episcopal Church is a historic church located in Valley Lee, St. Mary's County, Maryland. It is an active parish within the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. The church building is a well-preserved example of late 17th and early 18th-century ecclesiastical architecture in Southern Maryland.
The original church, built of wood, was established in the late 1600s, although the current brick structure dates primarily from 1702-1703. Significant renovations and additions have been made over the centuries, including the addition of a gallery and a bell tower in the 19th century.
St. George's Episcopal Church is significant for its historical associations with the early establishment of the Church of England in Maryland and its prominent role in the community. The churchyard contains a historic cemetery with gravestones dating back to the 18th century, providing valuable genealogical and historical information about the area.
