Speak (The Roches album)
Speak is the seventh studio album by the folk-rock trio The Roches, released in 1989 on MCA Records. It marked a shift in production style for the group, incorporating more polished and pop-oriented arrangements than their earlier, more acoustic-based work.
The album features songwriting contributions from all three Roche sisters: Maggie Roche, Terre Roche, and Suzzy Roche. While still retaining the trio's signature intricate harmonies and quirky lyrical perspectives, "Speak" incorporated elements of synthesizers, drum machines, and contemporary production techniques prevalent in late 1980s pop music.
Some notable tracks on the album include "Come Softly to Me," a cover of The Fleetwoods' hit, and "Gingersnap," an original song penned by Suzzy Roche. Although "Speak" received generally positive reviews praising the Roches' vocal performances and songwriting, it did not achieve significant commercial success compared to their earlier albums. It is considered by some fans to be a transitional album in their discography.
